In 1904, Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for his friend, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed to check time while flying without removing his hands from the controls. This revolutionary square design with exposed screws is widely recognised as one of the first modern wristwatches designed specifically for the wrist, predating the transition from pocket watches to wristwatches.
Cartier’s innovative SmartLink technology allows you to add or remove links from the bracelet without tools. By simply pressing a button on the underside of each link, you can resize the bracelet yourself in moments, eliminating the need for jeweller adjustments and ensuring perfect fit in changing conditions.
The QuickSwitch mechanism enables you to exchange between the steel bracelet and calfskin strap without tools. A small button on the underside of the watch releases the current bracelet or strap, allowing you to slide a new one into place. This system makes the Santos incredibly versatile, transitioning from formal to casual occasions in seconds.
The Calibre 1847 MC is Cartier’s in-house automatic movement featuring a 42-hour power reserve. Named after the year of Cartier’s founding, this movement incorporates anti-magnetic nickel phosphorus components in the escapement and movement mechanisms, as well as a shield made from paramagnetic alloys, providing protection against magnetic fields encountered in everyday life.
