The OMEGA Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space commemorates a pivotal moment in space exploration history – when astronaut Walter Schirra wore his personal Speedmaster CK 2998 during the Mercury Programme’s Sigma 7 mission on October 3rd, 1962. The First OMEGA in Space represents a perfect balance between historical accuracy and modern watchmaking. It honours the exact model that pioneered OMEGA’s journey into space exploration, predating even the official NASA selection of the Speedmaster as the official watch for manned space missions. This timepiece captures the spirit of that era while delivering the performance expected from a contemporary luxury chronograph.
The Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space features a slightly smaller 39.7mm case (versus 42mm), “Alpha” hands instead of “Baton” hands, a grey-blue dial rather than black, and distinctive case proportions based on the pre-Moon landing CK 2998 model. It also has a unique caseback with special engravings commemorating Walter Schirra’s 1962 mission.
The “Dot Over Ninety” (DON) refers to the positioning of the dot on the tachymeter scale directly above the 90 marking, a detail found on vintage Speedmaster models from the 1960s. This seemingly minor feature is highly valued by collectors as an authentic nod to period-correct Speedmaster design.
The unique grey-blue dial colour is created using CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) coating to replicate the patina that developed on some vintage CK 2998 models over time. This distinctive coloration sets the First OMEGA in Space apart from standard black-dial Speedmasters and evokes the appearance of well-preserved vintage examples.
The Calibre 3861 is OMEGA’s latest evolution of the legendary Speedmaster movement. It maintains the manual-winding tradition and general architecture of the original Moonwatch calibres while incorporating modern advancements including the Co-Axial escapement, Master Chronometer certification, and superior magnetic resistance. It represents the most technically advanced version of the movement that went to the Moon.
OMEGA’s patented comfort release adjustment system allows for a quick 2.3mm extension of the bracelet without tools. This innovative feature enables the wearer to adjust the bracelet throughout the day as the wrist naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes or activity levels.
While not strictly limited by numbered edition, the First OMEGA in Space is produced in much smaller quantities than the standard Moonwatch Professional, making it relatively exclusive. Its distinctive design elements and historical significance make it particularly desirable among collectors.
