The Speedmaster Ultraman Limited Edition exemplifies OMEGA’s ability to celebrate its rich heritage while creating fresh, collectable timepieces. As part of the highly successful “Speedy Tuesday” collaboration with Fratello Watches, this model has quickly become one of the most sought-after modern Speedmasters, appealing to both watch collectors and fans of Japanese pop culture.
“Speedy Tuesday” was originally a hashtag created by Fratello Watches founder Robert-Jan Broer in 2012, which evolved into a global community of Speedmaster enthusiasts. The success of this online movement led to an official collaboration with OMEGA, resulting in special limited edition Speedmasters released exclusively online, with the Ultraman being the second such release.
The original “Ultraman” Speedmaster refers to a rare 1968 reference ST 145.012 that featured an unusual orange chronograph seconds hand. This watch was selected by the props department of the Japanese TV show “The Return of Ultraman” for use by the Monster Attack Team in the series, hence earning its nickname.
When illuminated with the UV light included in the special packaging, the 9 o’clock subdial reveals a hidden silhouette of Ultraman’s face. This playful Easter egg is only visible under UV light and serves as a secret signature detail for fans of the series.
The Speedmaster Ultraman is powered by the legendary OMEGA Calibre 1861 manual-winding chronograph movement, the modern descendant of the Calibre 861 that powered Speedmasters from 1968 to 1996. This robust and reliable movement maintains the heritage connection to the Moonwatch legacy.
The production number of 2,012 pieces commemorates the year 2012, when the “Speedy Tuesday” hashtag was first created by Fratello Watches, eventually leading to the collaboration with OMEGA that produced this limited edition model.
The entire production run of 2,012 pieces sold out in less than two hours after its online release in 2018, demonstrating the extraordinary demand for special Speedmaster editions and making secondary market examples like this one particularly desirable.
