Breitling’s Limited Edition 140th Anniversary Watches
For their 140th anniversary, Breitling have decided to release not one but three new 18k red gold models. All equipped with their newest in-house movement, the Calibre B19. It is the first of their many manufacture movements to include a perpetual calendar function. It also has a longer power reserve than the B01/B04 movements (70 hours), providing approximately 96 hours at full charge. The exhibition case back on all three pieces allows you to see the craftsmanship at work, as well as the engraving of the Montbrillant factory on the red gold oscillating weight.
Possibly Breitling’s three most iconic pieces have been chosen for this anniversary. The Navitimer 43, Premier Datora 42, and the Super Chronomat 44. Personally, I think the Datora is a stunning watch in general but out of these three editions it has to be the Navitimer with its 18k red gold dial. All three pieces are limited to 140 pieces each (which makes sense), though the price tag of £48,000 each means these are out of reach to the average Breitling collector. Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition
This next limited edition release focuses on the delicate phenomenon of resonance. Having already achieved the feat of chronometric consistency and timekeeping precision via resilient resonance 8 years previously, Armin Strom have now released the smaller, thinner, and more elegantly proportioned 39mm Dual Time GMT Resonance. Certified by CSEM (Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology) as a true resonance. It is also a celebration of the 15th anniversary of opening its first fully integrated Manufacture in Biel.
Featuring the 18th in-house calibre created by Armin Strom’s co-founder and master watchmaker; Claude Greisler, the Dual Time GMT Resonance is a manually wound construction with 42 hours power reserve. Inside are two independent, symmetrically mirrored oscillators operating in anti-phase to become synchronised mirror images of one another. There is a world of detail to explore around this highly fascinating timepiece and you can find out much more in this brochure from Armin Strom.
A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Handwerkskunst
Stunning would be an understatement. However, at only 25 pieces worldwide, this is a truly limited edition watch. The Datograph Handwerkskunst is the eighth model of this special edition. Since 2011, “Handwerkskunst” has been the name used on the limited pieces that have been the most elaborately decorated. The dial features an ornate tremblage engraving, giving a layered structure with subtle light reflections throughout.
One of the key features of the Lange & Söhne Calibre 951.8, is that the chronograph levers reflect incident light in only one single direction. This is created by the finishers black polishing the surfaces of the levers, a particularly time-consuming and uncommon technique. The finishing and engraving on these pieces are a horological joy. Only available at A.Lange & Söhne boutiques. Check out the video below and the release page here.
Girard-Perregaux La Esmeralda Tourbillon “A Secret” Eternity Limited Edition
The final limited edition release in our September blog comes from Girard-Perregaux. An elegant homage to Constant Girard’s legendary 1889 ‘La Esmeralda’ pocket watch. A new creation to their already existing collection, this time embracing rich honey tones across the pink gold case and decorations. The golden pusher releases the caseback cover to reveal the in-house GP09600-2083 movement in all its glory. Impressively, the 78-component lyre-shaped tourbillon cage only weighs a mere 0.3g.
As described by Girard-Perregaux themselves “each bridge is painstakingly finished and features concave bevelling, mirror-polishing, flanks with horizontal ‘traits-tirés’ and rounded off arms. It requires 40 hours to finish each bridge, while the additional engraving found on the barrel bridge and tourbillon takes an extra 50 hours to complete”. It is therefore no surprise that like the previous releases before it, there are only 18 pieces made for purchase. Don’t forget the price tag of £381,000 either.
