Zenith was founded in Le Locle, Switzerland, in 1865. The company later became best known for the El Primero, an integrated automatic chronograph movement unveiled in 1969.
Operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5Hz, the original El Primero could measure elapsed time to one-tenth of a second. Its high-frequency architecture has continued to influence Zenith’s chronograph movements for more than five decades.
The movement was nearly lost during the quartz crisis, but Zenith watchmaker Charles Vermot preserved the technical plans and equipment required to restart production. This allowed the El Primero to return during the 1980s and remain central to the company today.

The Chronomaster collection is the clearest modern expression of the El Primero chronograph.
Chronomaster Original and Revival models draw heavily from Zenith watches of the late 1960s and 1970s, including the familiar overlapping subdials in blue, anthracite and light grey. The Chronomaster Sport takes a more contemporary approach with a ceramic bezel, integrated-looking bracelet design and the later El Primero 3600 movement.
Unlike a conventional chronograph seconds hand, the central hand on many El Primero 3600 models completes one rotation every ten seconds, allowing elapsed time to be read to one-tenth of a second.

The Defy collection represents the more contemporary side of Zenith. Models commonly use angular cases, integrated bracelets, openworked dials and technically advanced movements.
The Defy Skyline combines a modern sports-watch case with Zenith’s high-frequency movement technology. Defy 21 models go further by using separate regulating systems for timekeeping and the chronograph, allowing elapsed time to be measured to one-hundredth of a second.
Earlier Defy references can differ substantially from the present collection, making the exact model and movement important when buying pre-owned.
Zenith has a long association with aviation instruments and remains the only watch company entitled to use the word “Pilot” on its watch dials as a registered trademark.
Pilot models generally feature highly legible Arabic numerals, prominent crowns and designs influenced by early aviation watches. They provide a markedly different option from the more technical appearance of Chronomaster and Defy models.
