Seiko produces everything from affordable everyday watches to technically advanced mechanical divers and limited editions. This makes the individual reference particularly important when buying pre-owned. Two watches carrying the Seiko name can differ considerably in movement, construction, production numbers and collectability.

Seiko introduced Japan’s first diver’s watch in 1965 and followed it with its first 300-metre diver using a high-beat automatic movement in 1968. These early designs continue to influence the modern Prospex collection.
Prospex covers watches developed for use at sea, on land and in the air, although Seiko’s mechanical dive watches have become particularly popular with collectors. Many modern models reinterpret historical cases while adding contemporary movements, sapphire crystals and improved water resistance.

SPB references generally use movements from the 6R family and offer a more accessible route into Seiko’s mechanical Prospex collection. Many have become collectable in their own right, particularly regional editions, anniversary releases and discontinued colourways.

Seiko and Grand Seiko now operate as distinct brands and occupy different positions within the watch market. Seiko covers a very broad range of practical, sporting and collectable watches, while Grand Seiko focuses on higher-end movements, finishing and manufacture.
