Introduced in 1957, the OMEGA Speedmaster has developed into a broad collection encompassing far more than the familiar Moonwatch Professional. Depending on the reference and period, buyers can choose between manually wound and automatic movements, different case sizes, traditional black dials, colourful modern editions and models with additional complications.
The Moonwatch remains the defining Speedmaster, but Racing, Moonphase, Speedmaster ’57 and other discontinued collections provide noticeably different wearing experiences. Buying pre-owned also opens access to limited editions, previous-generation movements and dial configurations that are no longer available from OMEGA.
Case size alone does not determine how a Speedmaster will wear. Case shape, thickness, lug-to-lug length and bracelet design can make two similarly sized references feel considerably different on the wrist.
Moonwatch buyers must also choose between different generations and crystal configurations. Hesalite provides the traditional appearance associated with earlier models and can often be polished if lightly marked. Sapphire offers greater scratch resistance, with some references also featuring a display caseback.
Movement choice matters as well. Current Moonwatch Professional models use the manually wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, while earlier examples commonly use Calibre 1861 or 1863. Other Speedmaster collections may use automatic chronograph or Co-Axial movements, depending on the model.
Every Speedmaster is inspected before being offered for sale. We check the movement, winding and setting functions, crown, pushers and chronograph operation, including whether the hands start, stop and reset correctly.
We also assess the crystal, tachymeter bezel, dial, hands, case, lugs, bracelet or strap and clasp. Particular attention is given to case condition, bracelet wear and the presence of marks on hesalite or sapphire crystals.
Any accompanying box, papers, accessories and remaining manufacturer warranty are confirmed within the individual listing. Our photographs show the actual watch being offered for sale.
