The History of Christopher Ward Watches

Christopher Ward was founded in England in 2004 by Christopher Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis. The company entered a traditionally conservative industry with a different approach: selling Swiss-made mechanical watches directly to customers rather than relying on a conventional network of retailers.

This direct-to-consumer model allowed Christopher Ward to concentrate more of each watch’s cost on its case, movement, dial and finishing. The result was a growing collection of accessible mechanical watches that offered specifications and build quality normally associated with significantly higher price points.

Although Christopher Ward remains a British company, its watches are manufactured in Switzerland. The brand’s design, administration and customer-facing operations are based in the UK, while its Swiss watchmaking operation handles movement development, assembly and production.

Christopher Ward’s development from an online watch retailer into a recognised watchmaker has been unusually rapid:

  • 2004: Christopher Ward is founded by Christopher Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis.
  • 2005: The company releases its first watches through an online direct-to-consumer model.
  • 2008: Christopher Ward begins working with Swiss movement manufacturer Synergies Horlogères.
  • 2014: Christopher Ward and Synergies Horlogères merge, bringing the British and Swiss sides of the business together.
  • 2014: Calibre SH21 is introduced, becoming the first commercially viable mechanical movement developed by a British watch brand in more than 50 years.
  • 2022: The C1 Bel Canto is launched, introducing an accessible chiming complication with exposed mechanical architecture.
  • 2023: The C1 Bel Canto wins the Petite Aiguille prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
  • 2025: Christopher Ward introduces the C12 Loco and the manually wound CW-003, its second in-house movement.

Today, Christopher Ward produces everything from practical dive watches and integrated-bracelet sports models to chiming watches, moonphase complications and watches powered by proprietary movements.

Notable Christopher Ward Watch Collections

The Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto

The C1 Bel Canto is one of Christopher Ward’s most significant watches, combining an exposed mechanical display with a sonnerie au passage complication that chimes once at the beginning of every hour. Its hammer, gong and supporting components are visible on the dial, giving the watch the appearance of a far more expensive independent creation. The model’s importance was confirmed when it won the Petite Aiguille prize at the 2023 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.

The Christopher Ward C12 Loco

The C12 Loco builds on the integrated design of The Twelve while introducing the manually wound CW-003 movement. Its free-sprung balance and escapement are displayed prominently on the dial, while twin mainspring barrels provide approximately six days of power reserve. The result is a modern sports watch with genuine mechanical interest and one of the most technically ambitious movements Christopher Ward has produced.

The Christopher Ward C1 Moonglow

The C1 Moonglow offers a contemporary interpretation of the traditional moonphase complication. Two large luminous moons rotate beneath a smoked sapphire dial, while a peripheral date display runs around the edge. Powered by the JJ04 movement, the moonphase should remain accurate to within one day over approximately 128 years, combining traditional watchmaking with a far more modern visual design.

The Christopher Ward Twelve Collection

The Twelve is Christopher Ward’s integrated-bracelet sports watch collection, recognised by its twelve-sided bezel, textured dials and sharply finished case and bracelet. It has been produced in several sizes, colours and materials, with the same case architecture later forming the basis of the more technically advanced C12 Loco.

The Christopher Ward Trident Collection

The Trident is Christopher Ward’s established dive watch range, combining strong water resistance, luminous displays, rotating bezels and robust Swiss automatic movements. It represents the practical side of the brand and remains one of its most recognisable and enduring collections.

Christopher Ward’s Watchmaking Innovations

Proprietary Movements

Christopher Ward has developed several proprietary movements and complications, moving the brand beyond its earlier reliance on standard Swiss calibres. Calibre SH21 introduced twin mainspring barrels and a five-day power reserve, while the manually wound CW-003 used in the C12 Loco extends this to approximately six days and places the free-sprung balance prominently on the dial.

The Bel Canto Chiming Mechanism

The C1 Bel Canto uses the FS01 movement to sound a single chime at the beginning of every hour. Its hammer and circular steel gong are displayed openly on the dial, turning the complication into the central visual feature of the watch.

The Moonglow Moonphase

The C1 Moonglow uses Christopher Ward’s JJ04 moonphase movement, which should remain accurate to within one day over approximately 128 years. Its large luminous moons and smoked sapphire dial give the traditional complication a more contemporary appearance.

The Light-catcher Case

Christopher Ward’s Light-catcher case combines curved surfaces, recessed flanks and contrasting finishes to make watches appear slimmer and more sculpted on the wrist. The design is used across several collections, including the Bel Canto and Trident.
