Sinn is known for producing functional German watches with clear displays, robust cases and technology developed to improve reliability in demanding conditions. Its collection includes restrained everyday watches as well as highly specialised aviation and diving instruments.
The model number is only the starting point when buying pre-owned. Case material, water resistance, movement, Sinn technologies and the condition of any coating can vary considerably between references. Limited editions and discontinued models can also differ substantially from the standard watches on which they were based.
The 103 is one of Sinn’s longest-established pilot’s chronograph families. Its recognisable layout combines an automatic chronograph with a rotating countdown bezel, strong dial legibility and a case designed for practical use rather than decoration.
The Sinn 103 A Sa B Limited Edition Ref. 103.0601 introduces a blue sunburst dial with contrasting silver subdials. Its 41mm stainless-steel case contains the Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement, visible through a sapphire case back.
Production was limited to 500 individually numbered watches. The model also features Sinn’s Ar-Dehumidifying Technology and is water-resistant to 200 metres, giving it specifications that extend beyond those of a conventional aviation chronograph.
The U1 is one of Sinn’s most distinctive professional dive watches. Its angular hands and large luminous markers prioritise legibility, while the 44mm case is manufactured from highly seawater-resistant German Submarine Steel.
The U1 S adds a black hard coating applied over a TEGIMENT-hardened surface. This combination provides the all-black appearance while improving the resistance of the underlying case to scratching.
With 1,000 metres of water resistance, a captive unidirectional bezel and an automatic Swiss movement, the U1 S is a substantial tool watch. Its diameter, thickness and weight should be considered carefully, although its crown position helps prevent it from pressing into the back of the hand.
The 613 St combines a professional dive watch with an automatic chronograph in a 41mm bead-blasted stainless-steel case. It is water-resistant to 500 metres and tested against European standards for diving equipment.
Unlike a conventional chronograph with a 30-minute counter, the 613 St uses a prominent 60-minute recorder. The watch also incorporates Sinn’s Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, magnetic-field protection and a D3 system that allows the pushers to operate without conventional screw-down collars.
The result is a diving chronograph designed around legibility and practical timing rather than simply adding chronograph styling to a dive watch.
TEGIMENT Technology hardens the surface of selected Sinn cases and bezels, making them considerably more resistant to scratching than untreated stainless steel. On certain models, a black hard coating is applied over this hardened surface.
Ar-Dehumidifying Technology uses a drying capsule, specialised seals and protective gas within the case. The system reduces moisture inside the watch, helping prevent fogging and slowing the ageing of movement lubricants.
Sinn also uses German Submarine Steel in models such as the U1. This material was selected for its strength and resistance to seawater. Other watches incorporate magnetic-field protection, oil-filled cases or specialised temperature-resistance technology depending on their intended use.
The exact technologies fitted should always be checked against the individual reference because they are not included across every Sinn model.
Sinn Spezialuhren was founded in Frankfurt in 1961 by pilot and flight instructor Helmut Sinn. The company initially concentrated on navigation clocks and pilot’s chronographs designed around practical functionality and direct legibility.
Engineer Lothar Schmidt took control of the company in 1994. Under his direction, Sinn expanded its technical development and introduced systems including Ar-Dehumidifying Technology and TEGIMENT surface hardening.
