Breitling offers a broader range than its aviation reputation sometimes suggests. The Navitimer remains the obvious choice for buyers drawn to pilot chronographs, while the Chronomat and Super Chronomat provide a more versatile sports-watch design. The Avenger and Superocean focus on durability, and the Premier offers Breitling’s chronograph engineering in a more restrained case.
Having bought, inspected, photographed and sold Breitling watches from across these collections, we find that case size, thickness and bracelet choice make a considerable difference. Some Breitling watches have a strong wrist presence, while others are far more wearable than their dimensions suggest.
Buying pre-owned can also provide access to discontinued references, limited editions and earlier dial configurations, often at a substantial saving against the original retail price.
Every Breitling is inspected before being offered for sale. We assess its operation, overall condition, chronograph functions, case, bezel, crown, pushers, bracelet or strap, accompanying box and documentation, and any remaining manufacturer warranty.
Model-specific details also matter. On a Navitimer, we inspect the condition and alignment of the slide rule and its printed scales. On a Chronomat, bracelet wear and the condition of the bezel rider tabs require particular attention. Chronograph hands should start, stop and reset correctly.

Breitling watches use several different types of movement depending on the model and period.
The Manufacture Calibre B01 is the brand’s best-known modern chronograph movement. It uses a column-wheel and vertical-clutch construction and provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve. It is found across modern Navitimer, Chronomat, Premier and Top Time references. Breitling’s current specifications confirm the B01’s 70-hour reserve and manufacture construction.
Earlier watches and some current references use proven movements derived from suppliers such as ETA and Valjoux. These should not automatically be considered inferior. Many are reliable, widely understood and straightforward to maintain.
Breitling also uses thermocompensated SuperQuartz movements in selected professional watches where accuracy and resilience take priority over traditional mechanical construction.
The Navitimer is Breitling’s defining aviation chronograph. Its circular slide rule creates the detailed dial and bezel design that makes it immediately recognisable.
The Chronomat and Super Chronomat combine chronograph functionality with stronger water resistance and a more versatile sports-watch design. Their rider-tab bezels and Rouleaux-style bracelets give them a distinctive identity.
The Avenger collection offers larger cases, clear displays and robust construction, while the Superocean and Superocean Heritage ranges cover modern and vintage-inspired dive watches.
Premier models provide a more traditional chronograph appearance, while Top Time watches draw heavily on 1960s motorsport design. Together, these collections mean Breitling is not limited to oversized aviation watches.
